Homework due 7/13

For Wednesday, you've got a couple of things to do based on what we discussed in class on Tuesday. Check out the two assignment headlines below, as well as the reminder.

Assignment 1: Plagiarism Quiz
To get some practice recognizing plagiarism, complete this handy-dandy online quiz. After you ace it, get me the confirmation certificate in some way: print it out, take a screenshot, ESP mind-beam it, etc.

Assignment 2: "Mr. Boyd" Response
Choose one of the 3 major types of elaboration and respond to the article accordingly. There's no length requirement; just aim to say something you're happy with and that gives me enough information to follow your viewpoint. The 3 types are:
  • Developing ideas already stated by the author.
  • Developing critical viewpoints.
  • Producing new ideas.
See pp. 96-97 for more specific strategies for developing responses.
Update! Please include at least 1 quote from the article in your response.

Reminder: Wednesday's homework reading comes from a long article ("Sociology of Discrimination...") that's posted on WebCampus. I won't be handing it out, so you'll need to print a copy for yourself. I do not recommend reading it on the computer screen! It'll be easier if you can mark up an actual document.

  1. This article definitely makes me think about how hard blacks had it back in the day. Me being a minority in today's society is a walk in the park to what they had to go through. To literally be stripped of your own land, and being forced to sell it to a "white farmer" because you are black is just wrong.

  2. Ok after really analyzing this article for the past hour, I believe that Mr, Boyd should have taken action way before Obama became president considering Obama is Black and so is Mr. Boyd. Does anyone see the favoritism? Liek Why didnt Mr. Boyd go to the President whhen Bush, or Clinton were in office? I dont know just seemed odd to me! Like I am not running to Obama because someone treated me wrong and nows my chance to be compensated from past events, I would have fought and fought throughout the years!

  3. Shanice, I'm wondering some of the same things, though I also wonder how much of the story we're not getting. Granted, it's a lot longer than the Chait article, but still--you can't tell a whole life in three pages. Plus, of course the fact it's an interview makes the whole thing really subjective...

Why *not* go to the higher authorities earlier though? And does that put President Obama in a weird position, maybe? If he's worried about the appearance of favoritism?

  4. I just did some Wikipedia-ing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Black_Farmers_Association) and found out that Mr. Boyd did in fact go to the government earlier; he had meetings with President Clinton and with the US House Committee on Agriculture. Does that change things?

Also, that reminds me--we should talk about Wikipedia usage. I'll try and remember for tomorrow!
